For CAMWS Vice Presidents

Here's a new flyer (2003) you can use to promote CAMWS Awards.

 

 

 

CPL Goals

2004-2005

  • increase visibility of Latin programs in your area (newspaper articles, local parades, holiday events, 3k runs/walks, kite flying competitions, Halloween haunted houses, helping at football games, whatever)
  • utilize CPL funds more effectively for broader, more visible promotional activities (see above)
  • encourage or organize letter writing campaigns to thank principals, superintendents and school boards for supporting Latin in tough economic times
  • increase visibility of National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week
  • expand and utilize the master teacher list
  • promote CPL Online (once launched)

2003-2004

  • revise website to be more in line with the new CAMWS website
  • increase number of teachers being nominated for teaching award
  • provide downloadable materials online for teachers--posters, brochures, etc.
  • launch CPL Online, an online journal primarily of pedagogical papers presented at CAMWS
  • to develop both a proactive and a reactive plan for dealing with programs in crisis
  • expand master teacher list to include master teachers from all the states and provinces

2002-2003

  • Improve communication between the CPL committee and CAMWS vice-presidents
  • Provide an orientation for vice-presidents at CAMWS 2003
  • Gather information about Latin teaching in CAMWS territory

2001-2002

  • identifying Latin programs in each state and anticipating openings
  • developing contacts between CAMWS members and state foreign language coordinators [LINK]
  • creating a list of expert high school teachers willing to speak to college students about careers in high school Latin teaching, sponsoring such events, putting testimonials on the CPL website [LINK]
  • identifying the Latin teacher programs and their coordinators in CAMWS territory and obtaining statistical information about their graduates [LINK]
  • developing and distributing information about Latin to high school administrators and counselors

2000-2001

  • identifying Latin programs in each state and anticipating openings
  • developing contacts between CAMWS members and state foreign language coordinators

  • increased and more geographically diverse CPL grant requests
  • develop the CPL website
  • celebrate and publicize successful Latin programs and activities
  • encourage better ties between CPL and high school programs, in particular by establishing an award to recognize the best high school activity promoting Latin in CAMWS territory
  • developing contacts with state foreign language coordinators and keeping them informed about Latin activities in their states

Checklist for Vice Presidents

Fall 2004

  • Read your CAMWS Handbook! It is a great source for information about your position.
  • contact state/provincial organizations with information about CAMWS membership, scholarships, brochures, CPL grants, CPL Promotional Activity award, etc.
  • determine Latin programs in the state/province where openings are anticipated or program cancellations threatened
  • contact the foreign language liaison at the State Board of Education to determine pending issues related to foreign languages in general and Latin in particular
  • target potential applicants for CPL grants and encourage them to apply
  • create a list of expert high school teachers willing to speak to college students about careers in high school Latin teaching, sponsoring such events, putting testimonials on the CPL website AND send list of expert high school teachers to the CPL Chair by December 15th. (This information will be used for National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week.).
  • contact the Latin teacher programs and their coordinators in your state/province and obtain statistical information about their graduates

Spring 2005

  • monitor status of vacancies and programs in jeopardy
  • prepare report on state of Classics in your state/province for Regional VP by February 1st. This report should summarize the state of Classics in your state/province with particular emphasis on CAMWS activities like CPL grants and the CPL goals for 2004-2005, and what activities are planned for NLTRW, etc. Regional VPs need to have their report turned in no later than March 1st.
  • set a goal of at least one CPL grant application from your state/province by April 1st
