Description

I spoke to all three of my classes (we are on block schedule) about the Latin Teacher shortage. I told them that if they ever feel called to be a teacher, that Latin is a great subject to teach, because it provides students with a strong academic foundation, and a strong program attracts great students. I've certainly enjoyed teaching it. Students were interested to learn that there are positions in Latin in the middle and elementary schools as well as high school, and that most positions are available at the pre-collegiate level. I posted the brochure on my bullentin-board for those who want more information. I also suggested they see the ACL Teacher Placement website for a list of current positions (too many of which go unfilled).

I mentioned that it is NLTRW to my 6th graders and told them to think about it as a possible career. They see how I love my job. So who knows what seeds I've planted? They are young and this is their first exposure to a language other than English. Thought I would help, however, in what little way I could.

I printed out the flyers and bookmarks on matching teal paper (they looked very nice) and laminated the bookmarks, and distributed them to my Classics dept. colleagues (4 of us), enough for all of our students. We even made extra copies of the flyer to have on hand and to give the career counseling office on campus a good many copies. We will also have some available to students on the campus at large at our Majors and Minors Fair on Thursday, as well as copies of some of the other promotional materials available on the website. In addition, I will have lunch next week with three students who are very interested in teaching Latin. I also plan to invite these students to join our state classical association and to attend our spring meeting later in the month. Overall we had a very positive response to the week. Students were often surprised to hear that Latin jobs are available, and several students expressed an interest in teaching Latin for a year or two just to try it out or get real life experience before going to graduate school. I won't be able to attend ACL this summer.

Told them about the shortage of Latin teachers. Also that I, when I was in high school, never ever would have thought of becoming a teacher - so you never know what the future will hold!

Description

Downloaded Ginny's bookmarks and printed them on neon bright cardstock, then let students choose the color they wanted. Linked to idea of choosing careers. What do they like about class? I like those things PLUS . . . We are required to have character education once a week (I like Tweety Bird, myself!), and I tied the joys of teaching Latin to that this week.

Description

NLTRW came at a very fortuitous time because it was also the week we were supposed to talk about course offerings for the next school year. I started talking about what next year's classes would be like and the the requirements for earning an "advanced academic" diploma and graduation. Then I talked about foreign languages in college with great emphasis on continuing their study of Latin. THEN, I asked them to consider a liberal arts education, the idea of teaching and the need for teachers, AND THEN I talked very seriously about becoming Latin teachers and how critical the shortage is. Also, today, I was invited by Mary Washington College to give a presentation and participate in a question/answer session with Latin and/or Classics majors interested in becoming Latin teachers. There were 10 college students present. So, I covered high school students from 9th to 12th grade and college students, freshmen through soon-to-graduate seniors who are interested in coming back to certify to teach.

Description

My younger kids (9th grade) sensed that something was up, and I was a little awkward about promoting the profession -- sisn't really want to make it sound like I was tooting my own horn. My presentation was fairly quick, and students asked about how I got interested in teaching, and they were astonished that at least 4 former students of mine who were currently teaching Latin. My older, AP-Vergil kids were much more receptive to the whole idea. I started by describing, quickly, the five Latin teachers I had in high school. Questions follwed after this, centering on why I picked Latin, what college courses were like, and so forth. Truth be told, this was "preaching to the choir"; This is a group which is considering such a profession already, I think. In sum, no handouts,. no bells and whistles, but I have always been better anectodally, anyway.

Description

To get everyone excited about the week, the school newspaper, "The Trojan Times," (I am the advisor for 6-8th grade and our mascot is a Trojan) sponsored a contest with a mythology trivia question about the Trojan War and a contest for students to submit Latin connections to everyday life. In my third grade classroom, we celebrated throughout the week with special activities. The first day we had plans to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday, so we recited the first page of the Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss in Latin wearing togas. I invited Mr. Joe Luvara, a lawyer and former high school history teacher to discuss how Latin is used in the Law today and to present a slide show on ancient Rome. I invited Magister Scott Stickney from the Pennsylvania Classical Association and a 7-12 Latin teacher to present a Latin lesson to the class. He discussed Latin names and gave everyone a mythology bookmark to color, and a pencil and paper clip with Latin phrases on them. I did a presentation on Ancient coins with information from Ancient Coins for Education. The students were thrilled that they got to hold something that some belonged to some Roman over 1500 years ago. We started cleaning our own ancient coins as a class. We are having a mosaic contest tomorrow and the winner will get an ancient coin to take home. I brought in a wax writing tablet that I got from Dr. Barcio at Pompeiiana and a stylus for the children to "write like a Roman." We discussed the story of Romulus and Remus and I brought in a statue of the she wolf to tell the story. We practiced our dialogues from Minimus (our text by Barbara Bell) for a special presentation on April 1st for parents about our Latin studies. My students told me they thought this week was "optime" and the fun is just beginning! Gratias tibi ago for the inspiration! Latina vivit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Here at the University of Texas the Department of Classics did ?National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week? big time. Candace Kash, our undergraduate coordinator, rallied the troops, and local Latin teachers Ginny Lindzey, Jennie Luongo, Nick Martin, Bob Bogan, Cathy Moore, and Karen Moore joined Chair Tim Moore, Professor Bill Nethercut, and Candace herself to address every student studying Classics at UT this spring (over 2000) on the joys of teaching Latin. A .5% return would give us 10 new Latin teachers, so cross your fingers!

Description

My name is Candace Kash. I am the Undergraduate Coordinator for the Department of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin. At the request of my Chairman, Dr. Tim Moore. I forwarded his request that members of the local Classics association (Armadillo Classics Society) come and speak to our students in their classes. I then contacted all of the instructors in our department to find which days would not be suitable in the week. I then set up a schedule where all of our guest speakers and two of our faculty members (and I) would go speak to every undergraduate class that we offered this semester. We used many of the materials provided (bookmarks, Some top reasons...,) we order the brochure consider teaching in the 21st Century from CAMWS, and I also made a flier giving instructions on how to become a certified Latin teacher through the resources at the Univ. of Texas-Austin. The flier I made also included some financial aid information. We also distributed the material "Secondary Considerations" to our graduate students. Thank you for the fliers and supporting materials that was very helpful.

Description

On Thursday I visited the campus of The University of Texas at Austin and spoke to 3 classes. On Friday I spoke for the whole period in my own classes. We began with a pro/con discussion on teaching in general, then read and discussed the Top Reasons pamphlet, followed by a look at the Consider Teaching Latin brochure, the bookmarker, and a brochure on universities with teacher prep in Latin in Texas. It was a good day.

Description

Just talked. Told them about the intangible rewards I experience, the joy that being in the classroom with them gives me and how long I waited to share this body of literature with someone who would enjoy it with me. Talked about sitting at the table with them while Catullus pulls up a chair and pours out his heart and his hendecasyllabics. Then I talked about what the procedure would be to become a Latin teacher in Oregon, and what the demand is. I also talked about the demand in other states and my experience of being recruited for jobs I wasn't even looking for. Finally, I told them that it is not necessarily the top scorers who make the best Latin teachers, but those who love the literature and love the students, and if they felt that love stirring, they should consider this work.

Description

To the heads of each dept. in the school I sent: (1) a laminated, color NLTRW bookmark; (2) the color "Consider Teaching..." brochure AND poster (3) the top half of the "possible NLTRW activities" sheet on green paper (explaining what NLTRW is and why it is); (4) most of the NLTW letter (which accompanied the color brochure) from Ken Kitchell and James O'Donnell on gold paper (further explaining what NLTRW is and why it is); (5) a color photocopy of a poster/sheet showing 19 people from disparate professions who have studied Latin; (6) a letter from myself explaining NLTRW, encouraging dept. heads to share information with their students and fellow dept. members, or to ask me questions, on white paper. To all the members of the school: a school-wide e-mail encouraging teachers to view the information sent to division heads (so that they can mention it to their students) and to encourage their students to stop by the wonderful Classics room we have at the school (photos of which can be seen on my web-site "http://staffweb.oprfhs.org/~jchochola/LatinLinks/OPRFClassicsRoom.html") which a good percentage of the student body doesn't even know exists! To my Latin students: a color laminated NLTRW bookark; "Consider Teaching..." color brochure; the top half of "possible NLTRW activities" on green paper; and an extra credit assignment to share with two people (preferably total strangers but definitely not close friends or relatives) what we talked about as a class about taking/teaching Latin and NLTRW. One of the assignments during NLTRW, as I went around to check-in homework, was for students to reflect on the question "Why do *you* think I became a Latin teacher?" We spent the entire period discussing but one of the things which received the biggest response was when one student responded, "Because you had two degrees in Latin...what else could you do besides teach?!" and I replied "I'm not teaching Latin because I have two degrees. I have two degrees because I've wanted to teach high-school Latin since senior year of high school." Jaws literally dropped.

talked with a couple of my top students about teaching Latin - one is a freshman and the other is a junior. The junior is seriously considering it as an option and did attend a workshop that was held at the Ohio JCL covention last weekend specifically for future Latin teachers

Description

First day: handed out book marks. We talked about teaching in general, and teaching Latin, in particular. We discussed the advantages of teaching Latin: teach BEST and BRIGHTEST students in a school (they of course love to hear that, and it is true!) Day 2: Handed out CAMWS pamphlet. Reiterated day 1 message. Talked about salaries, 10 month work year, hours/day, benefits to teachers with families, etc. Day 3: Handed out B/W pamphlet.Talked about many careers available to students with Latin background, and of course returned to TEACHING as being very rewarding, creative, always new and different, profession. Day 4: Talked about aspects of what makes a good teacher. Students brainstormed qualities of a good teacher and then wrote a paragraph telling which of those qualities they possess. Day 5: Clip from video, Dead Poet's Society with Robin Williams teaching.

Description

I talked to all of my six Latin classes about the shortage of Latin teachers and as well as the shortages of teachers in general. I have some promotional articles about teaching Latin in high school and I made packets with them, including several pages of statistics about Latin. I've assigned all my students a packet and they have to make a promotional brochure based on the information in the packet. We are going to the computer lab next week to work on the brochures and they will present them to the class the last week of this six weeks. So far everything is going well.

Description

I allowed a college student who was attending my class to observe for a pro sem credit to speak to my classes about why he was preparing to be a Latin teacher. He discussed his passion for the classics, for JCL, and for his career as an educator. (We had talked about this in advance.) I followed up with comments of my own about the shortage of Latin teachers nationwide and about the rewards of teaching Latin. We made brochures available to those who wanted them. Then we took questions from the group.

I spoke to each class about the benefits of being a teacher. Actually, I try to do this at least once every other week, reminding the kids how much I love teaching Latin students, and how great they are in class. Not only does it build their self-esteem, but it's a continual reminder to me when I am losing focus as to why I am in this job.

Description

I have done nothing. I will mention to my 6th grade class. They are focused and this is obviosly benefiting them as evidenced in their grammar and vocabulary. This is my third year teaching Latin to 6th graders and I wish I had more time to teach mood and tense other than indicative and present, respectively. For what it's worth I thought I would share.
