Mission
Statement
The purpose of the NCLG is to initiate and
coordinate efforts to promote the study of Latin
and Greek on behalf of all cooperating classical
associations by developing an agenda of
promotional projects and activities.
The National Committee for Latin and Greek is
a non-profit organization, founded and sponsored
by twelve national and regional classical
associations and funded also by numerous state
associations and departments of Classics. The
NCLG is dedicated to the advancement of the
study of classical languages and civilizations
in North America.
The NCLG, a council of NCLG officers and
designees of its sponsoring organizations which
meets twice a year, serves as a forum for the
identification of nationwide needs and
priorities within Classics and for the planning
and implementation of promotional strategies and
programs. The NCLG provides a consensus of
direction for the advocacy of Classics, drawing
upon information, talents, and resources from
constituent associations and from affiliate
organizations in Europe.
The Committee endeavors to focus public
awareness on the study of Latin, Greek and
Classics through contacts with schools,
universities, and the news media. The NCLG
produces a variety of brochures, information
packets, and statements about the value of
classical studies which parents, teachers and
school administrators can use to help build and
maintain programs. The Committee sponsors a
Classics Alert Network (CAN) to respond to
crises and opportunities affecting Classics
programs in the schools and universities. It
communicates with the officers of its sponsoring
organizations through semi-annual mailings and
its promotional newsletter PRO BONO. Its support
for and participation in the Joint National
Committee for Languages and cooperation with
modern language organizations nationwide
encourages participation in the development of
national language policy and in movements to
advocate and to improve the study of all
languages, ancient and modern.
The Committee relies on the expertise and
financial resources of its twelve organizational
sponsors, which include: The American Classical
League, American Institute of Archeology,
American Philological Assn, Classical Assn of
the Atlantic States, Classical Assn of the
Midwest and South, Classical Assn of New
England, California Classical Assns, North and
South, Eta Sigma Phi National Honorary Society,
National Junior Classical League, National Latin
Exam Committee, and the Ontario Classical
Association. Affiliate organizations in Europe
include the Joint Assn of Classical Teachers in
Britain and the Netherlands Classical
Association.
